I’ve operated various small businesses over the last 10 years with reasonable success – I think they call it ‘solopreneuring’… and during that time the use of online marketing as a primary means of advertising has grown exponentially.
Initially, I didn’t do anything about it – I had next to no digital presence and almost no idea of where to start. But as time has gone on, the availability of free website development platforms and social media channels has meant that it is now possible for anyone to embrace digital marketing – if only they knew how.
So I had a go!
Being a ‘one man band’, everything has had to be done on a shoestring budget – I haven’t had the funds for professional web developers, graphic artists or social media marketers. But as I have long had a personal interest in marketing, design and copywriting, I decided to DIY…
And while the results of what I’ve done won’t be at the level of the professional marketing companies, I’m here to tell you that, with some time and effort, you can set up a reasonable digital presence that can work for your small business.
So I’ve decided to document some of the things that I’ve learned, the mistakes I’ve made, and also some of the successes I’ve had helping other small businesses to embrace digital marketing… I hope this is of some use to someone out there!
